Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is thought to improve the flow of energy in the body and facilitate healing. Suction from cupping draws fluid into the treated area. This suction force expands and breaks open tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin. Your body treats the cupping area like an injury. It sends more blood to the area to stimulate the natural healing process. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.
At the centre we use Dry Cupping. The air inside a plastic or glass cup is suctioned or vacuumed out by placing the cup on the skin. The cups are then left in place for several minutes and also involve briefly moving the cups to stretch and massage the area. Any discoloration or marks from cupping usually go away within 7 days of the session.
Cupping therapy may help with the following conditions, among others:
- lower back pain
- neck and shoulder pain
- headache and migraine
- knee pain
- lumbar disc herniation
- cervical spondylosis
